The 1940's

 The 1940's were dominated by World War 2.  The war in Europe ended on  8 May 1945  (V-E day) whilst the war on the Eastern Front did not end until 14 August, after the US had dropped nuclear bombs on Japan.  The rest of the decade was spent dealing with the consequences of the war.
