HAWTHORN AVENUE

 In the mid-1950's the family moved to Hawthorn Avenue which would be the family home for the next 20 years (house on the right).  When they moved in the road was lined with magnificent hawthorn trees most of which now seem to have disappeared.  It was a very spacious house compared with Cranbrook Road.  Semi-detached, four bedrooms and a large garden with 2 apple trees at the bottom.  Like most h

John Angus, Rachael's sister's son, standing outside the house showing the type of windows in the house when the family lived there.  These were made of thin glass and on cold winter days ice would form on the inside of the bedroom windows.  Clothes would be placed under the blankets to warm them through before putting them on in the morning. 

 This is a tilly lamp, fuelled by paraffin and used to take the chill off the bathroom which led off the kitchen.  It was not very successful and winter bath-time could be challenging. Baths were made of galvanised steel coated in enamel.  This  was really cold against the skin.
