John's role was as Forward Scout, initially on horseback but eventually armoured cars were shipped out to replace the horses which were abandoned as the war progressed. He served in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and with the 8th Army in Egypt and Jordan.
He watched the Battle of El Alamein unfold from a desert ridge. He then went to Italy. After 4 years in the theatre of war the Regiment return
John with one of his favourite horses. Many of these horses had been taken by the army from their owners and shipped overseas with the troops.
Much loved horses would arrive at the barracks with notes giving their names and favourite treats

Medals l-r 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and 1939-45 War Medal. Oak leaf spray on ribbon shows John was "mentioned in despatches" for an act of outstanding bravery.
