6 January 1990 marked their 50th wedding anniversary. There were two celebrations, the first at home in January attended by immediate family and then in the summer in Bardwell attended by the wider family
At the summer party John raised a toast the Rachael and said they looked forward to the next 50 years together. He was not to see a singled year. He died of a brain tumour on 3 October. Rachael was greatly diminished by the loss of her loving partner and great support.
Christine married Jerry. They had met in 1980 and lived together for a number of years before finally getting married in 1993.
Lucy was more decisive than Christine and did not wait so long to marry Leigh in 1999.
Rachael was lonely without her John and although she took trips to Scotland and Majorca her health deteriorated through the 1990's. She started to suffer a number of small strokes and developed cardio-vascular dementia.
Was freed and later elected as the first black president of South Africa, giving birth to the Rainbow Nation. Mandela was a wonderful man who preached reconciliation despite the terrible injustices of apartheid and the deprivations that he personally had suffered.
Divorced wife of Prince Charles tragically died in a car accident in Paris.
