The Empire strikes back

 John enlists in the Household Cavalry at Carlisle Castle.  He would leave Silloth and travel south for training and then onto London for training and ceremonial duties.

At the age of 17 Rachael would be sent down to London to go into service.

The Wall Street crash of 1929  lead to a failure of economic systems around the world.  

Unemployment by 1932 more than 20% of the UK workforce was unemployed, 24.5% in US, 27% in Canada and 30% in Germany.

The Dust Bowl caused by severe drought in the Great Plains of the US (the world's bread basket) made the depression worse as families lost their livelihoods and food was scarce.

Fascism, Nazism, and extreme Communism gained followers due to poverty around the world. 

Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and the first Nazi concentration camp was established

King George died in 1936 and was succeeded by his son Edward who would abdicate over the Government's refusal to allow him to marry Wallis Simpson.

Oswald Mosley formed  the British Union of Fascists in 1932,  as a result of the rejection of his proposals for responding to the Great Depression  by the Labour government.  The party was  banned outright in 1940 due to Nazi sympathies.

Prime Minister Chamberlain seeks  a policy of appeasement to keep Britain from sliding into another war.

Britain declared war in 1939 after Germany invaded Poland in breach of the agreement with Britain

 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. 

Malcolm Campbell breaks the land speed record by travelling over 300mph

 Howard Hughes flies around the world in 3 days and 19 hours, setting a new record.

 The Loch Ness Monster was first spotted
